"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14
That is the prayer and the contents of what our praying should sound like as we are days away from the upcoming election.
Many big issues are on the table as they always are in every election - issues such as abortion, the meaning of marriage, the economy, taxes, energy, social justice, the purpose of government, etc.
Our primary responsibility is to pray for our nation. Vote the values of the Bible. Model civility towards others of opposing views and in the end, trust God with the outcome. "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." Romans 13:1
We must remember that before we are Democrats or Republicans or etc., we are first and foremost followers of Jesus Christ, and the truths of the Gospel were around long before the issues of the 2012 election. Remember that the Apostle Paul took the Gospel of Christ to the four corners of the world at that time and preached to many different cultures and political systems, the message of Christ as supreme to any other message, system or movement. May I appeal to you to guard against participating in some of the mean, crass, apocalyptic, and angry speech that will be thrown about in the days before and the days right after the election.
I think the hardest thing in the prayer found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 is the "will humble themselves" part.
Oh God, we beseech you to teach us humility and forgive us our sins and heal our land.
